Recently I stumbled across an old YouTube video, released nearly 20 years ago by Paul Baloche. The topic: 'Choosing a keyboard player for worship teams.'
I knew I had to give it a watch, and see if Paul's advice from 2007 still applies to worship teams today. A lot has changed in the last two decades for keyboard players:
- the move from analog hardware rigs to popular software based setups
- needing to play several different instruments, Sounds, pads, textures, etc.
- being comfortable playing along to a click and tracks
So how does Paul's advice hold up? Watch the video below to find out!

I think the previous comment was right.
There is a place for both Michael w smith kind of music and no always is today music always so worship or reflective. Sometime it is hard for the congregation of many ages.
It is important to play your part but your heart and making the team solid and worshipful is very important. We are all there to glorify God and sometimes hymn or choruses need less.
Love contemporary worship but also have appreciation for hymns and worship style over the decades. Did not appreciate the commentator’s snarky chuckle when Michael W was mentioned by Baloche and doubled back on this when he eventually commented on the segment. It is very frustrating how contemporaries so quickly cast aside and giggle at the “old fashioned” as if it were inferior and no longer relevant – as if today is superior. Sad.
