As worship keys players, we're the people who often get asked to "fill space," for the moments during a worship service- Sometimes these are planned- like announcements, or a baby dedication, and other times things go off-script- a prayer as you transition songs, an altar call as the Pastor wraps things up, etc.
These opportunities to come alongside and support your pastor from the keys can be powerful, but they can also be quite intimidating. What if you play a wrong note? What if the band joins in and suddenly you lose track of what progression you were on? How can you be sure that what you're playing is supporting what is happening, and not becoming a distraction?
To help break some of this down, I asked my friend Seth Putnam, a Worship Pastor at New Life Church in Colorado Springs and an incredible keys player, to share his heart for playing under your pastor during a time of prayer. The result was a super practical video that goes deep into practical ways you can play under your pastor. I also asked Seth some harder questions I know many keys players wrestle with when it comes to playing during these moments, like what do you say to people who view this as manipulative, or can you still do this if your church doesn't have these lingering, spontaneous moments?
I really enjoyed this video on playing background music but the chords it showed just flashed by so fast I can’t get them all,,, is there any way you can spell them out ? Thank you, Becky
