If you had to make a list of the must have sounds for a keys player, what would you put on the list?
Probably at least the staple stuff- a piano, a pad, a synth, maybe some strings or organ.
An instrument that you probably wouldn't see make that list, and you may not have even heard of before today.. is a vintage, tape-based oddity called the Mellotron.
If you don't recognize the name 'mellotron' I wouldn't blame you, but you've definitely heard its signature sounds. I've always loved this vintage sound and so we started wondering, what would modern worship sounds have sounded like if they'd come out of that old wood box? That led down a whole rabbit trail... you've just gotta hear what happened.
I was fortunate to be able to play a mellotron in the late 60s and early 70s, as well as be inspired by players like Mike Pinder of the Moody Blues and Rick Wakeman of Yes. Since then I’ve used sample-based VSTs for computers and iPads even for worship music when I needed that 16-Violin vibe only a mellotron could do. But your version sounds incredible, especially since it was built from scratch! I’m looking forward to trying it out.
