We created a simple practice guide that will help relieve the pressure of these unplanned, playing under your pastor, or during an altar call moments where it's just you and the pastor on stage and you're being expected to 'fill space', come what may.
You can use this guide to experiment playing under different Sunday moments, such as an encouraging message, scripture reading, or during a prayer.
So grab your keyboard, your favorite piano + pad combination, and get ready to follow along with this new, practical video.
I always make sure the underscore is not too busy, not overpowering, or moving too quickly. It is not to draw the attention of the people in the congregation away from the speaker, the prayer, etc. I refrain from playing something that is recognizable as a song. Even using the same progression of a song, I will not change chords in rhythm. Another thing is playing in the key of a song your band is getting ready to play for the congregation. If the song is in the key of F, I will play my underscore in F.
I love the feature in Sunday Keys to have an assigned sustain pad to help underscore. It is helpful to keep that warmth while you are playing.

This is a wonderful instructional…I also enjoyed your first one…I still do that simple riff… but this is all spontaneuos…been doing this for years and so glad to see this in a practical medium to express and teach this very important lesson…I’d say 75% or more keys players have no idea what to do in these moments..
