We put together a new video that breaks down how you can insert passing chords into contemporary worship songs. To help, I brought along my friend Isaac Rodríguez to explain what passing chords are and the best times to tastefully insert them into any song.

If the idea of spicing up your standard chord progressions seems intimidating, don't stress! You don't need a degree in music theory to get started. This video makes it simple and is totally beginner friendly.

Sherri,
The way I think of it is this.

1. Choose your destination chord. If you are going to Am, imagine you are briefly in the key of Am and it is now temporarily your 1 chord.
2. In the key of Am, E major is the 5 of that key.

Great video! Now can you explain how we determine what passing chord to use? Do you use always use 3 to go to 6?
