So I get asked all the time "How can I learn the basics of synthesis and sound design?" It's a hard question to answer because there is so much to learn and so many places to find knowledge.

But there's one place that's right under your nose and I even overlooked it for a long time.

If you're on the Sunday Sounds Insiders email list you might remember back in the day (relatively speaking) I sent out an email about MainStage's Help Guide. It's a treasure trove of super practical information about how MainStage works from the horse's mouth.

Well there's something of a bonus section in the MS3 help guide.

When you access the help guide from within MainStage, you can navigate to the "MainStage Instruments" option and you have an in-depth look at all of MainStage's instrument plugins.

SUPER HELPFUL!

But this section contains another really helpful bit of content. Click on MainStage Instruments...

Then scroll all the way down to the bottom of the topics overview to find the "Synthesizer basics" section. This is a really practical and well written introduction to a TON of really useful sound design concepts.

So if you're someone who learns well via the written word, this section of the Help Guide might be a great way for you to start to become more familiar with synthesis concepts. The great thing is after reading through Synthesize basics you can scroll back up and see how those concepts are practically applied within each of MainStage's instrument plugins!

Sometimes the most helpful things are hidden right under your nose... For example sometimes I lose my ink pen and am looking all over for it only to realize I'm holding it in my mouth.

This is basically like that only replace the ink pen with an introduction to basic synthesis and replace my mouth with MainStage's toolbar...

The analogy holds up.

Talk soon, folks!
