You probably know this: all keyboards are not created equal. All patches aren't created equal either.

Top of the line keyboards tend to have a realistic feel that is spot on but a lot of the more budget friendly options leave something to be desired in terms of touch and feel.

In the same vein, some patches or sampled instruments respond differently to others.

So how can you balance all of this out?

The answer: velocity curves

MainStage makes it possible for you to fine tune the response of your keyboard within the software but it takes a little bit of work. Here's how to do it:

Your first and most basic option is in the "Layout" tab. Select the on-screen keyboard and you have the option to decrease or increase velocity sensitivity. Start here if you want to make adjustments.

Your second option presents itself at the channel strip level. Select a channel strip and press "Midi Input." Then by selecting "Velocity Input" you can gain more control over the velocity curve of that channel strip.

The last option is using the "Velocity Processor" midi FX at the top of a channel strip. First add the plugin by selecting it in the midi FX drop down:

Then you can make adjustments to the velocity within the plugin. It's almost like a compressor but for midi data. This plugin can do a great job of leveling out unruly sample instruments or overly sensitive keypads.
